Day 18

[I pray] that the God of out Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints. Ephesians 1:17-18
One final glance at this passage, focusing today on the very last phrase, "what are this riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints." This is a segment that is filled with wonder, and is worthy of much meditation and prayerful consideration. Several thoughts; first, it is a staggering thought that God would have an inheritance in human beings. We usually consider an inheritance as something that comes from beyond us, that makes us more wealthy, or gives us something that makes our lives more enjoyable. And the truth of this phrase is that God, the Creator of all things, has decided that an eternal relationship with you and me is going to make His perfect existence even better! What a mind-boggling idea! Toss that one around in your mind and heart for a few thousand years and see what happens!
Secondly, let's consider what this inheritance is to Him. Remember, the whole point of creating us was to have intimate relationship with Himself, namely as the Bride of His Son Jesus. In genesis 1:18, God speaks to Adam as he first man, and promises him a "helper comparable" to him. We know from Ephesians five that the Genesis passage is a picture of Christ and the Church, so what God is setting in place here is a picture of Christ and the Church, so what God is setting in place here is a picture of what we are to Him- a helper comparable to His Son, the perfect counterpart, the partner in ministry that will walk alongside the Son as co-heirs of the Kingdom of God. Let your heart be expanded with the truth of this, asking the Holy Spirit to empower you to receive and understand what He has in mind as His glorious inheritance in the saints.
Prayer: Jesus, my little mind is too small to comprehend the reality of this, beyond just saying the words. Send Your Spirit to open my understanding, so that I may know Your thoughts and sense the joy of Your heart as You look forward to my becoming all You have created me to be.
